The 7th grade championship in the 38th annual Holy Angels Basketball Classic saw the host school take on Badger-Red. The Badgers took a first period lead, 15-8, and maintained control of the game to claim this year’s title with a 60-39 win. The victors were paced by Kaden Martin (14 points), Sam Geldnich (14) and Dawson Rondorf (!4). Aaron Tennies led the Holy Angels scoring with 19 points, while Quentin Butschlick (10) and Casey Gerner (9) added to the effort.
In other action, Badger-White defeated Cabrini, 40-16, to claim third place honors. Port Catholic, led by Michael Ross (15) and Patrick Lippe (14), won their final game against St. Kilian, 37-28.
Final 7th grade standings: 1st-Badger-Red; 2nd-Holy Angels; 3rd-Badger-White; 4th-Cabrini; 5th-Port Catholic; 6th-St. Kilian.
The second evening of pool play set the stage for Saturday’s finals. The host team advanced to the championship game with a 49-15 victory over St. Kilian. Seven players tallied for the Royals led by Aaron Tennies (14) and Nate Waech (10).
Holy Angels will face Badger-Red which advanced by defeating Cabrini 47-10. Dawson Rondorf (14) and Evan Roell (13) led the Badger Scoring attack. In other action, Badger-White saw a nine point fourth period lead dwindle before defeating St. Kilian, 31-29. Brennan Timm led the Badger scoring with 15 points while Adam Johnson contributed 14 points to the Cougar effort.
In the Monday pool play, the seventh grade Holy Angels team outscored Badger-White 16-6 in the first period as Aaron Tennies tallied 11 of his game-high 20 points. The Royals used a 12-4 third period run to clinch their opening game, 44-27.
In other seventh grade pool play, Cabrini defeated Port Catholic, 29-23 in a close game, led by the three-point shooting of Michael Mollwitz. Badger-Red easily handled Port Catholic, 53-23, with eight players in the scoring column.
In the final round of the eighth grade division in the 38th annual HA Basketball Classic, Holy Angels jumped out to a 14-12 first period lead against St. Francis Borgia. A 12-2 run in the second period gave the visiting team a lead that would take them to a 50-39 win. HA’s Keghan Tighe led all scorers on the final day with 23 points.
In the championship game, St. Joseph blanked Badger-White in the first period 14-0 and coasted to the title with a 41-26 win. In the battle for third place, Cabrini-Green held a 33-25 margin going into the final stanza against Badger-Red. The Badgers outscored Cabrini 18-2 down the stretch to capture third place honors. Good Shepherd defeated Cabrini-White, 30-26, in the opening game of the day.
Final 8th grade standings: 1st-St. Joseph; 2nd-Badger-White; 3rd-Badger-Red; 4th-St. Frances Borgia; 5th-Cabrini-Green; 6th-Holy Angels; 7th-Good Shepherd; 8th-Cabrini-White.
In second round action in the 8th grade division, the host team used pressure defense and good ball movement to jump out to a 12-6 first period lead over Good Shepherd. The Royals continued to control the tempo of the game and gradually increased its lead, posting a 41-28 win. Keghan Tighe led the HA scoring attack with 24 points with Chase Melstrand adding eight. Aaron Weiss connected on trio of three-pointers to lead the Rams.
In other action, Cabrini-White took a 18-14 lead to the locker room against St. Francis Borgia. Rob Jeter got hot in the third period with 8 points to propel Borgia to a 24-22 third period edge and a 33-27 victory. Badger-White advanced to the championship final by defeating Cabrini-Green, 40-30. Lukas Broske led the Badger scoring with 22 points. In the evening’s finale, St. Joseph edged out Badger-Red, 45-43, in a see-saw battle. Caleb Baback and Sean Dlugopolski combined for 32 points to advance to the championship game. Gregor Huntington and Ethan Zais provided 35 points for the Badgers.
In first round action, Holy Angels battled Badger-White and grabbed a 5-0 first quarter lead. The Royals had a hard time containing the Badgers in the second period as the visitors went to the locker room with a 14-9 lead. The home team kept pace during the third period but was unable to overcome a seven-point margin in the final stanza. Badger advanced in the championship bracket with a 30-26 win. Keghan Tighe led all scorers with 17 points, including 7×7 from the free throw line. Badger was paced by Lukas Broske with 13 points.
In other action, Cabrini-Green also advanced with a 40-28 win over Good Shepherd. Joey Pettit led the victors with 18 points, while Mason Wallschlager tallied 18 pints for Good Shepherd. Badger-Red defeated St. Francis Borgia led by Ethan Zais (18 points) and Alex Huntington (11). Robert Jeter led the Knights with 12 points. A balanced scoring attack, led by Caleb Baback and Nathan Wagner (13 points each), propelled St. Joseph to a 49-28 win over Cabrini-White. Luke Hupfer tallied 12 points for the Knights.
